The Synodal Process

On January 19, Alain Trottier (Immaculée-Conception parish in Kapuskasing) participated in the Continental Assembly (Francophone sector) of the synodal process, presided over by Bishop Poisson, Bishop of St-Jérôme and Mont-Laurier, and President of the CCCB.
He first presents us with some highlights and, next week, his impressions and more…

The “Facts”

After the subgroup rounds, a plenary session followed to share the three main points raised in the subgroups.

The main points that were raised in our rounds were

  • need for inclusion (women, youth, the disadvantaged),
  • real sharing of tasks with training/education/support not only for the laity with roles in the parishes/dioceses so that they can carry out their tasks effectively and competently, but also for the parishioners to take their Faith beyond what is taught in the preparation of the various sacraments,
  • that we seem to be more concerned with our churches than the welfare of ALL our parishioners (not just those who attend church on Sundays),
  • need for co-leadership between clergy and laity,
  • make a real place for women,
  • the synodal process created great joy in the parishioners as they were given an opportunity to express themselves without fear of being judged,
  • that we are a wounded and hurtful church,
  • some level of concern that this process will not lead to real change.

Once the three rounds were completed, we moved into a short plenary session during which the three most important points from each group were shared.

In summary, the most important points of our Assembly plenary were

  • The Synod is a beautiful experience,
  • there must be equality among all the baptized (emphasis on women)
  • need for shared leadership,
  • dignity for all the baptized emphasis on the poor),
  • develop the spirit of synodality on an ongoing basis,
  • healing the wounds of the marginalized,
  • people who are not normally heard felt free to speak out,
  • Jesus Christ must be the center of our tent (allusion to the theme of the Assembly) and that we must be nourished by his message,
  • inclusiveness, we must make ourselves poor in order to welcome everyone, without judgment,
  • need of formation and accompaniment for our laity.

Next week …

his impressions and more …

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 18 — 25, 2023

“Do good; Seek justice”

Isaiah 1,17

History

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was first proposed in 1908 as an observance within the Roman Catholic Church by Fr Paul Wattson, founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in Graymoor, New York. In November of 2014, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops endorsed the cause for Fr Wattson’s canonization.

Since the founding of the World Council of Churches in 1948, many other Christian denominations around the world have come to celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and since 1968, the Faith and Order Commission of the WCC and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity have collaborated to produce materials for use over this eight-day period.

2023 Theme

The international theme and materials call Christians to recognize that the divisions between our churches and confessions cannot be separated from the divisions within the wider human family.

Isaiah challenged God’s people in his day to learn to do good together; to seek justice together, to rescue the oppressed together, to defend the orphan and plead for the widow together. The prophet’s challenge applies equally to us today. How can we live our unity as Christians so as to confront the evils and injustices of our time? How can we engage in dialogue, increase awareness, understanding and insight about one another’s lived experiences?

Resources & Celebration

The Canadian Council of Churches — of which Bishop Vallée, P.M.E., was a member while serving as the Bishop of Hearst — has been preparing for several years various resources for celebrating a day of prayer in parishes.

You can find these resources on the CCC website at ww.weekofprayer.ca.

Have you visited our website lately? Do you view our FaceBook page regularly?

Through our website you have access to Healthy Environment resources, the latest digital issue of Inter-Par, newsletters from some parishes, their mass schedule if you are passing by, and other information of all kinds

www.hearstmoosonee.ca

Our FaceBook page features something unique, a short “historical” video of events in the life of our diocese. Parish and diocesan events are added as we learn about them. Did something historical happen in your parish? Do you know some details of an event or other, please let us know at chanc@hearstmoosonee.ca.
