A native of Montreal, Archbishop Prendergast was born on February 19, 1944. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1961 and was ordained a priest on June 10th, 1972.
Bishop Prendergast was chosen to become titular Bishop of Slebte and Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto on February 22, 1995. Bishop Prendergast was consecrated in St. Michael’s Cathedral, Toronto, on April 25, 1995.
He became Archbishop of Halifax on September 14, 1998. The Archbishop of Halifax is responsible of the dioceses in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
In January 2002, he became also Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Yarmouth.
Bishop Prendergast became the ninth Archbishop of Ottawa on June 26, 2007 named by Pope Benedict XVI.
In January 2016, he was named Apostolic Administrator of the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall and, in April 2018, became its ninth bishop.
On May 6, 2020, the territories of the archdiocese of Ottawa and the diocese of Cornwall were merged and the two dioceses amalgamated to create the new archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall.
Archbishop Prendergast was named the first Bishop of the new archdiocese.
On November 29, 2020, he was named Apostolic Administrator of the diocese of Hearst-Moosonee by Pope Francis.
